Starting Grant awarded to Karl Attard

Denmark’s Independent Research Council have awarded a prestigious Sapere Aude starting grant to Karl to establish a research group at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark.

Through this project, Karl and his team will be exploring marine primary production in the Arctic https://dff.dk/en/apply/supported-research/research-leaders/research-leaders-2022/researchleader-11?set_language=en

The project will explore where and when photosynthesis occurs in the Arctic Ocean, how fast it happens, and how it is being modified by climate change. The focus will be on understudied shallow seafloor (benthic) ecosystems, of which the Arctic has plenty. In fact, more than half of the Arctic Ocean’s 15 million km2 consists of relatively shallow shelf seas which can harbour substantial primary production.

Using a combination of experimental studies and remote sensing, the project will bridge multiple scales of investigation ranging from the microscale to pan-Arctic, and from hours to decades.

Two positions will be advertised in 2023.
