Upcoming PhD defense

Our PhD student, Leah Brinch-Iversen, will be defending her PhD on 17 February 2026 at 13:00 CET in the DIAS Auditorium at SDU.

Leah will be presenting a lecture entitled ‘Blue carbon from brown algae: The fate of macrophyte-derived dissolved organic matter’.

A key part of Leah’s PhD was developing a protocol to investigate release and bioavailability of dissolved organic carbon from common macrophytes such as the eelgrass Zostera marina and the brown macroalga Fucus serratus. Expect plenty of incubations, microbial growth curves, G-models, and even some hydrodynamic (fjord-scale) models!

Committee members comprise Senior scientist Dr Jutta Niggemann from the University of Oldenburg in Germany, Professor Lasse Riemann from the University of Copenhagen, and our very own Associate Professor Peter Stief will serve as Chairperson.
