About LUMEN
LUMEN: Light-Utilizing Marine Ecosystems and their Networks
We explore the photic seafloor- the distribution and production of light-dependent (photosynthetic) organisms, collectively referred to as photobenthos, phytobenthos, or benthic primary producers. These include various types of plants (e.g. seagrasses) and algae (e.g. seaweeds and diatoms) that rely on sunlight to generate energy through photosynthesis.
We’re interested in the timing and magnitude of their production, and how carbon flow pathways link these habitats to surrounding ocean ecosystems.
Our research group is embedded within the Department of Biology at SDU in Odense, Denmark, and is part of a large and international research section called Nordcee, which broadly investigates microorganism-environment interactions.
As part of the Danish Institute for Advanced Study, we explore the interdisciplinary implications of our work through research and teaching.
