Panel discussion at 2023 Arctic Circle Assembly
More than 2000 participants attended the 2023 Arctic Circle Assembly, which took place at the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre in Reykjavík from the 19th to 21st October.
Our group participated in a panel discussion which was co-organized by the Cornell Brooks Tech Policy Institute at Cornell University and the Danish Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Southern Denmark.
The panel, which was moderated by Dr James Patton Rogers, Executive Director of the Cornell Brooks Tech Policy Institute, focused on ‘Challenges and Opportunities in an Increasingly Ice-Free Arctic Ocean’ and included a highly interdisciplinary list of speakers:
Christina Viskum L. Larsen, Professor of Inuit Health and Wellbeing, University of Southern Denmark
Caroline Kennedy-Pipe, Professor of History and Ethics of Warfare, Loughborough University, UK
Michael Gjerstad, Research Analyst, International Institute for Security Studies, Germany
Ingrid Medby, Senior Lecturer in Human Geography, Newcastle University, UK
Karl Attard, Assistant Professor of Marine Sciences, University of Southern Denmark and Danish Institute for Advanced Study
Highlights of the Assembly included keynote speeches by Admiral Rob Bauer, Chair of NATO Military Committee, United States Senator Lisa Murkowski, President-Designate for COP28 H.E. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, and ‘Her Deepness’ Dr Sylvia Earle. The Assembly was an opportunity for anyone in the audience to interact with the panelists, and with audience members representing broad interest groups, from ambassadors to activists, there was no shortage of discussion.
The Cornell-DIAS group were lucky enough to be invited to a viewing of artist Steinunn Thorarinsdottir’s studios in Reykjavík. We are grateful to Steinunn for taking the time to introduce us to her broader collection of work.
Our participation was generously supported by a DFF Arctic Networking grant.
